Gear Shift

Gladstone, Australia

Gear Shift is a practical, pre-vocational training program created by COGSY to support disengaged youth aged 15–18 in the Gladstone region. Delivered in partnership with local schools and industry, the program offers young people a hands-on alternative to traditional classroom learning, helping them build confidence, work habits, and job readiness.

Designed as an 8–10 week immersive program, students attend a live industrial site one day per week to build real-world skills and experience. The program is fully funded by COGSY with the support of our industry partners and community sponsors, who believe in investing in the potential of local youth.

With just 10 places per intake, Gear Shift is a genuine opportunity for the right students to step up and take ownership of their future. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about showing you’re ready to turn up, work hard, and give it a real go.

Participants complete a formal workplace induction and industry-recognised White Card certification, gaining exposure to real expectations in a safe, structured environment. Activities focus on skill-building through pallet construction, concrete work, and basic scaffolding, with an emphasis on teamwork, communication, reliability, and safe work practices.
